In the U.S. currency market the previous day, the U.S. dollar rose against major currencies. The FOMC minutes indicated caution regarding upside risks to inflation and confirmed that many participants viewed a higher policy rate path as prudent.The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note also rose to around 5.3%, and the Dollar Index climbed 0.32% to 102.24. The dollar-yen pair held firm in the low 158-yen range and has remained in that range during Tokyo trading hours today.
Among European currencies, both the euro and the pound fell against the dollar. As selling pressure on French government bonds intensified again, the euro fell 0.53% to $1.1198, and the pound fell 0.42% to $1.3216.Although Germany’s August trade balance, released today, showed a surplus of 19.5 billion euros, exports fell 0.8% from the previous month. We will be watching to see if the direction of European currencies changes following the release of the ECB Governing Council minutes at 8:30 p.m. and remarks by BOE Governor Bailey at 9:15 p.m.
